What this free website audit checks

The audit runs 40 checks on the page you enter and your site-wide files, then gives you an overall score, a separate accessibility score and a plain-English fix list. It's the same first pass we run before quoting on any website project.

SEO

The basics Google reads first when deciding what your page is about and whether to show it.

Page title
Present and 20–60 characters, so it isn't cut off in search results.
Meta description
Present and 70–160 characters. It's the snippet people read before clicking.
Canonical tag
Tells Google which address is the real one when a page is reachable at several.
Single H1 tag
One main heading that states what the page is about.
Heading order
No skipped levels (H2 straight to H4), so the page outline makes sense.
Indexable by search engines
No stray noindex tag hiding the page from Google.
HTTPS
A secure connection, which Google and browsers both expect.

Content & conversion

Whether the page gives search engines enough to rank and gives visitors a way to become enquiries.

Content length
At least 300 words, so there's enough substance to rank for.
Links
Internal links to your other pages, and no vague link text like “click here”.
Contact options
A clickable phone number, email, WhatsApp link or contact form.
Analytics installed
Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, Clarity or Plausible, so you can measure results.

Social sharing & structured data

How your page looks when shared on WhatsApp, LinkedIn or X, and how clearly it describes itself to Google.

Open Graph title, description and image
The preview card shown when someone shares your link.
Twitter card
The equivalent preview for X (Twitter).
JSON-LD structured data
Schema.org data (Organization, LocalBusiness, Product…) with no JSON errors.

Accessibility

Fourteen checks based on WCAG guidelines, scored separately. Accessible sites work better for everyone and are easier for search engines to understand.

Image alt text
Every image has an alt attribute (empty is fine for decorative images).
Form field labels
Every input has a real label. Placeholder text alone doesn't count.
Buttons and links have names
Icon-only buttons and links still have something for screen readers to announce.
Pinch-to-zoom allowed
The page doesn't stop mobile visitors zooming in.
Keyboard access
No positive tabindex scrambling the tab order, and nothing focusable hidden from screen readers.
Page structure
A <main> landmark, a skip-to-content link and no empty headings.
Language and viewport
An html lang attribute and a mobile viewport tag.
Frames, IDs and media
Titled iframes, unique element IDs and no audio that plays on its own.

Technical health

Site-wide setup that affects how search engines crawl you and how fast your pages feel.

robots.txt
Present, and not blocking search engines from the whole site.
sitemap.xml
Present, and listed in robots.txt so crawlers can find it.
404 page
Missing pages return a real 404 status, not a “soft 404” Google might index.
www / non-www version
Only one version of your site is live, or both point to the same address.
Mixed content
No images or scripts loading over insecure http:// on an HTTPS page.
Image loading
Images are lazy-loaded and have width and height set, so the layout doesn't jump.
Charset, favicon and outdated markup
A declared character set, a favicon, and no meta keywords or old tags like <font>.

How the website audit works

  1. Enter your website address. Your homepage or any page you want checked, such as a product or landing page.
  2. We read the page like a search engine. The tool loads the public page along with your robots.txt, sitemap, 404 page and www setup.
  3. You get a scored report. Each check is marked Pass, Improve or Fix, with a short explanation. Share it with your team or developer using the report link.

Why run a website audit?

Most websites that don't get enquiries aren't short of visitors because of one big problem. It's usually a handful of small ones: a missing meta description that makes the Google snippet look broken, a stray noindex tag left over from development, no clickable phone number on mobile, or share previews with no image. None of these are visible when you look at your own site, and each one costs you clicks, rankings or leads. A quick SEO audit surfaces them in seconds, so you can fix the cheap wins first. Run it again after every redesign, plugin update or theme change, since these are exactly the moments settings get lost.

Frequently asked questions

Is this website audit really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no email wall and no limit on how many sites you check. If you'd like a person to review your site in more depth, you can ask for a free expert review after the audit.

What does the website audit check?

40 checks across five areas: SEO (title, meta description, canonical, headings, indexability, HTTPS), content and conversion (word count, links, contact options, analytics), social sharing and structured data (Open Graph, Twitter cards, JSON-LD), accessibility (14 WCAG-based checks with their own score) and technical health (robots.txt, sitemap, 404 page, www setup, mixed content, image loading).

How long does the audit take?

Usually under 10 seconds. It can take up to 30 seconds for slow sites, because the tool loads your page, robots.txt, sitemap, a test 404 page and the www version of your domain.

Does it measure page speed or Core Web Vitals?

No. This tool checks your page's code and site setup. For speed and Core Web Vitals, use Google PageSpeed Insights, or ask for our free expert review, which covers speed as well.

Why does it say it couldn't reach my site?

Some hosts and firewalls block automated visitors, and sites that are down or still being built can't be read. Leave your details on the results page and we'll audit the site by hand instead.

Is the audit safe? Do you store my results?

The audit only reads pages that are already public, the same way a search engine does. A third-party reader service fetches the page; the report is built in your browser and we don't store it. We only receive your details if you ask for the expert review.

Can I share the report?

Yes. Every report has its own link, such as pixelgrid.in/audit/?url=yoursite.com. Opening it runs a fresh audit, so whoever you send it to always sees your site's current state.

How do I fix the issues it finds?

Each result explains what's wrong and what good looks like. Many fixes, like a missing meta description or alt text, take minutes in WordPress, Shopify or Webflow. For anything bigger, PixelGrid builds and fixes websites for businesses across India, and we'll tell you honestly what it takes.

Want these issues fixed for you?
